Small Pimples

September 29th, 2009

It seems like acne comes in a hundred forms. You have blackheads, white heads, pimples and cysts. These have varying degrees of severity and can be taken care of in many ways. But don’t you hate when you see the smaller pimples creeping up. You know as well as I do that when they are larger and more easily identified it’s nothing to take care of them. A little cleanser and maybe popping it (not that I recommend popping it) gets rid of the pain and helps it start healing.

But what about when it’s too small for that? It’s these times that we have difficulty identifying them and working with them. It may be because they haven’t hit the surface or that it just won’t be that big. So how do we treat them? The best method for the smaller pimples is to keep them clean and wait it out. They will either become larger and follow standard treatment methods or they will stay small (which usually don’t hurt) and go away without any issues. It’s difficult when you see them and know they are coming that you’re not able to do anything about it but unfortunately when they are in this small pimple or pre pimple stage your best bet will always be to wait!

Self Esteem & Acne

September 29th, 2009

So why is it that when you’re young with pimples everything you knew about you comes into question? When I was younger and first started getting pimples, I had no idea the number of flaws in my looks and personality. Where did it go? Since pimples don’t seem to form on pre pubescent skin, before puberty and before the major pimple time of our lives we have no idea that we are not perfect images of gods. NOTE: Pimples don’t form before puberty because you need fully developed oil glands to produce pimples.

Before puberty, which also entails other changes that do not help this new self conscious issue, we do not have to worry as to whether our faces are beautiful because they must be. They are perfectly clear and smooth. We also don’t realize that our ideas or thoughts will ever come into question. When our hormones begin to change at puberty and our pimples begin suddenly we are aware of self doubt. If your face isn’t perfect maybe you’re not perfect either? This frankly isn’t true. You are perfect, you are the perfect you. However that’s where your self confidence went. It’s not specifically with your pimples or appearance it’s with your sudden awareness you may not be perfect.

Over the counter acne treatments

September 28th, 2009

Clearasil and other over the counter treatments promise great results when it comes to treating mild to moderate cases of acne but what about them works? There are so many items on the shelves it’s hard to wade through them. Do you choose the generic forms of the products you’ve heard of? Do you go with the closest one and hope it helps? The best idea is to know what they do and why they work.

Over the counter medicines have many active ingredients that target a different aspect of acne. Benzoyl peroxide is probably one of the most effective over the counter active ingredients and targets the bacteria as well as the extra oils that spread the bacteria and helps remove dead skin cells that block the pores. You can get it in varying strengths from 2.5-10%. It can however cause redness and excessive dryness of the area so only use the amount you need to treat your pimples.

There is also Salicylic acid which slows the shedding of cells inside the hair follicle. This is most effective for white heads and blackheads. It can however have a small stinging sensation. Alcohol is used as a cleaning agent and targets the bacteria. It seems that except in specific cases if this is used alone it does little more than another cleanser. So look at the labels and find what works for you.

At Home Acne Treatments

September 25th, 2009

Have you heard about the idea of using Windex as an acne treatment? What about urine, egg whites or snail serum? Acne has been plaguing us for years and because of that we will often try anything. Windex and other harsh chemicals applied to the face or other areas of skin are dangerous. Not only are they bad for your skin and kill the cells directly the fumes are often also dangerous to the eyes and lungs and you are putting them close enough that its something that can and will happen. Urine therapy indicates that if you wash the affected area with urine it will dry the skin and cure acne.

Where urine is sterile and will not harm you any more than another skin drying agent, it’s disgusting and shows very few results. Egg whites have been used for years to tighten the skin and shrink the pores so this one may have some validity to it. Snail Serum? Where to begin? Other than the fact that its difficult to harvest, snail trails, as I call them, do seem to contain the same chemicals that our natural skin oils produce and so they may in fact work to help our skin heal from the damage as well as stimulate collagen production. Still look for it in a more sterile method than going into your garden and letting a snail walk all over you.

Natural Acne Remedies

September 24th, 2009

Maybe you grow a garden or maybe you should. If you take peppermint leaves and crush them, they all of a sudden become more than something that smells nice, they are a great home remedy for acne. Here’s the deal, peppermint contains menthol and when crushed with a mortar and pestle you can make the leaves into a thin paste. You allow the natural leaves chemicals to come out and then place them on the affected area for 5-10 minutes.

Then you take the time and rinse with cold water to close the pores back up after. Do not use soap or another astringent and repeat as needed for inflammation, redness and pain. Because it contains menthol and menthol is a natural anti inflammatory you will see results quickly. You may need to repeat this daily to remove a current inflammation but after that I’m sure once a week should keep you mostly clear. This method works for all types of acne including whiteheads, blackheads, cysts and nodules and mostly alleviates the pressure and pain associated. Don’t have room for a garden? You can get mint plants in the garden section and keep it by a window to promote it’s growth and leaf production.

Colloidal silver for acne

September 23rd, 2009

Colloidal silver has recently been proposed as an acne treatment to me however I have my doubts. The theory is that since colloidal silver is an antibacterial agent it will help fight the bacteria that causes acne. Now I’ve been unable to find how you are supposed to use this as an acne treatment so it is unclear if they are referring to using it as an acne wash or if you are supposed to drink it. With that being said, colloidal silver is when silver particles are so small that they become unnoticeable and suspended in water.

The problem is if you wash with it you’re looking at any other anti bacterial wash and if you drink it habitually you are putting yourself at risk of having sulfide or silver in the skin directly. On top of this after significant medical research it is not proven that there is any anti bacterial agents that remain in the body from colloidal silver after the body processes it and therefore no medical proof of its effectiveness. Colloidal silver over the ages has been used to treat a number of things from e coli to tuberculosis however there is no current medical proof of its medical effectiveness in any capacity. If you choose to use colloidal silver to treat your acne, be careful as there’s no proof that it works and you are putting metal directly into your body.

Carrots for acne treatment

September 23rd, 2009

So we’re always talking about natural treatments to acne. Did you know that a deficiency in Vitamin A and potassium can cause acne? These two vitamins are natural in the body and used to both fight the bacteria as well as used in the natural skin cell production process. When you are deficient in these areas you will find yourself with heavier cases of acne. You could take supplements in order to give your body more of these things or you could simply eat carrots.

Carrots contain all of these vitamins along with vitamins, c, e, k, calcium and magnesium which will help keep your immune system strong. By keeping your immune system strong and healthy you will find yourself better able to fight the bacteria that causes acne. There are other sources of Vitamin A and potassium such as bananas but it appears through medical studies that the best method is carrots or more to the point, carrot juice. The body is better able to process the carrot juice and does not cause as much waste as carrots in their whole form. It’s not a well known acne treatment and will only prevent further cases of acne but by simply adding a glass of carrot juice to our breakfast routine we will improve our skin. Isn’t it at least worth a shot?

Prescription Acne Treatments

September 22nd, 2009

It’s hard to know when normal acne ends and a dermatologist is really recommended and preferred. The hormonal imbalance caused by puberty, pregnancy and as we just learned stress can lead to acne where you find yourself wondering will washing be enough? Are prevention methods really enough when you see the splotches all over your face back neck and arms? The first sign you should see a doctor is when you have had no particular signs of acne previously and now you wake up one morning with breakouts around the face and back. If you find yourself with a very sudden case of acne you should in fact see a doctor. There are several afflictions that appear as acne does.

Sign number two that you should see a doctor is if you’re taking good and consistent care of your skin at home and the condition is worsening. There may be some medical treatments at your disposal and you don’t have to simply suffer.

And one of the most important reasons to see a dermatologist is if you find yourself extremely depressed or upset about your skin. If you’re finding that when you look in the mirror you cannot look past the acne and it causes deep negative emotions about yourself or your appearance do not wait. See a dermatologist and get it taken care of.

Whiteheads

September 11th, 2009

So there are many types of acne and pimples are just one of them. Their names often indicate how they look but not what is wrong so I thought I would go over some of them. White heads for instance are non inflamed skin buildups. These do not go deep into the pores and remain on the surface. If you’re going to pop anything on your skin it should be a white head because it stays up top and doesn’t go into the skin so it’s not likely to cause an infection.

A white head is a small buildup of skin cells and water on the surface of the skin and can generally be washed away. Because whiteheads have little if anything to do with bacteria traditional methods of acne care are likely to prove ineffective. White heads happen around bacteria but that is when the body sends quite a bit of white blood cells to fight the bacteria off and the white blood cells build up under the most immediate skin cells. It is not deep within the skin and does not start deep within the skin cells. Whiteheads are best treated with routine skin care. Proper skin cleansing and moisturizing should do the trick.

Hair & Acne

September 8th, 2009

Alright there, folks sorry to be the bearer of bad news but hair care plays a large part in the acne game. So what causes acne? Again bacteria mixing with dirt and oil to clog pores. I’m sure you’ve noticed that in the places that touch your hair you have more pimples. That’s because hair is always producing oil. So is your skin, as a side note your hair is just a different type of skin cell… weird.

That could just be me though thinking that’s weird. Now when you let your hair go an extra day or two or four (a little gross) you’ll have more oil and dirt built up around your face. Long hair or short hair you’re constantly touching your hair. Either with your hands or it just lays on your face or when you sleep the dirt and oil transfers to your pillow and you pick it up any where you lay on your pillow. When you have a constant source of dirt and oil touching your face, neck and back you’re bound to end up with more clogged pores. Hence! Wash your hair if you want to be pimple free. I promise, your face and friends will thank you!
